Some quotes over the years from my clients on their fight to keep employees.
- “If they can just pee in a cup, that’s all I ask.”
- “As soon as we train them, they leave.”
- “He just changed his mind once on the job.”
- “He probably wasn’t a good fit anyway.”
- (Years after the pee-in-the-cup statement:) “Frankly, I just don’t even ask about marijuana anymore. I’ll take anybody.”

If you also are wrestling with how to keep employees, Monster has an excellent list of 11 questions to ask in stay (not exit) interviews. This is a big part of addressing turnover.
Some of the questions take courage to ask. (Recommendations in Hip Socket’s quick guide to coaching apply to these conversations.)
And you shouldn’t ask the questions if you won’t address their answers.
But if you are looking to uncover employee motivations and engagement, a conversation where you are listening is a great way to start.
