On a trip to England in 1995, I stopped by a record shop and asked for a recommendation. The clerk described two albums as “brilliant,” pronounced in a way only the British can do, with bare impressions of Ls, Ns and Ts.
I bought both CDs and fell in love with both bands. I own all their records now. The first was Supergrass’s debut. The second was the album featuring this song from Blur.
Blur are best known for “Song 2” (“woo-hoo!”) and their front man’s side project, Gorillaz. As with Supergrass, I always felt like I was their only fan in the States. I was certainly the only one I knew until a guitarist named Brandon came to my university, and then a Japanese exchange student named Nobuko Takahashi.
So Brandon and Nobuko, this one’s for you.
