Horn Sections Make Rock Better: Out the Gap

The last Horn Sections Make Rock Better post came for Halloween. How about a St. Patrick’s edition?

You may know Sharon Shannon if you follow alt country (or roots rock or Americana or whatever we are calling it nowadays). She had a hit with Steve Earle called “The Galway Girl.” I knew the song before visiting Ireland, but on its streets, I not only learned the fact that Shannon was a local gal, but I also SAW THE GALWAY GIRL.

Well, that’s what I told myself. She was a young mother recently returned from living abroad with her parents in New York. “Her hair was black and her eyes were blue.”

I did not have eyes for her, as I was in the process of finding out a girl I left back in the States was my true love. A few months after I came home, I proposed.

(Shannon also happens to be a former member of the Waterboys, and finding that out sent me down a long rabbit trail of Waterboys and World Party hits. Time well spent.)
